1723 Vineyards Profile

     Written by Brian—Jul 20, 2019

Southeastern Pennsylvania contains a disproportionate number of the state’s wineries of note. Another great producer was recently added to that number. Located in Landenberg, near Wilmington, Delaware, 1723 Vineyards opened its tasting room in 2018 and immediately began attracting attention.

The Brandywine Valley property was originally dedicated to soybeans, but was not heavily cultivated. Tests of the soil identified the acreage as ideal for viticulture. So beginning in 2015, owners Sarah and Ben Cody began planting more than a half-dozen grape varieties. The Codys are fifth generation farmers and understand that great wine can only be made from superior fruit. Only high-quality, low-yield, estate fruit is used to produce 1723’s world-class wines.

Winemaker Gabriel Rubilar grew up in Mendoza and made wine in both Argentina and California before making his way to Pennsylvania. Rubilar began as a consultant, but is now the full-time winemaker. His philosophy of minimal intervention, combined with the premium estate fruit, nearly guarantees a successful outcome in the winery.

When you visit, there are a few wines that are among the most popular. Give some attention to the Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Others that you should look out for are the Albarino and Cabernet Franc rosé.

Be aware that parties of more than five must make a reservation, but don’t let that deter you. Make an effort to check out 1723 Vineyards. This is a must-visit venue and it is an easy day trip from Philadelphia, Baltimore and even Washington DC. So after you stop in, please let me know what you think.
