Hanover Park Vineyard Profile
Written by Brian—Aug 24, 2018
During their honeymoon in Southern France in 1996, owners Michael and Amy Helton were bitten by the wine bug. According to Amy, "they went to study their favorite artists and the region influenced their decision to make wine." They bought a farm that same year and in 1997 they began planting grapes.
By 2000 a tasting room was open and wines were being poured bearing the Hanover Park Vineyard label. Today the winery produces between 1500 and 2000 cases annually. As Amy explained, "they try to incorporate a love of wine and place into what they produce." This is one of the take aways from their time in France.
The fruit produced at Hanover Park is primarily French vinifera. In addition to some Bordeaux varieties, Rhone grapes like Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache add a unique quality to the wines. The offerings are allowed to age for three or more years before release, which means more mature wines are presented to the public. The wines are uniformly well crafted and the Rhone-style wines, in particular, are worthy of note.
Inside the tasting room, there is emphasis on educating visitors, which includes food and wine pairing. In addition, Amy and Michael are always willing to sit down with guests and explain the wine. In like fashion, the staff is well trained and customer focused. The old building provides a very homey and relaxing atmosphere, where it is easy to linger with a glass of wine.
This is a must-visit venue. So if you are in the Yadkin Valley, be certain to stop in. After you do, please let me know what you think.
