Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery Profile

Written by Brian—Feb 14, 2019

The oldest and most famous producer of fine wine in the Eastern United States, and perhaps the entire country, is Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery on Keuka Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes Region. More importantly, the winery remains relevant. Dr. Frank Winery is widely celebrated for wine quality and a willingness to test the boundaries of eastern wine with new varietals, winemaking techniques and innovative programs.

Dr. Frank began planting in 1955 and 1956 at a time when fine wine was not widely appreciated in the United States. Despite that, he demonstrated that vinifera (international varieties) can be grown successfully. Furthermore, he paved the way for other eastern producers and established a foundation for a winemaking tradition that is kept alive by his family.

Today Dr. Frank Winery has vineyards on both Keuka and Seneca Lakes for a total of 124 acres under vine. This allows the winery to produce as much as 40,000 cases annually and to engage in the extensive exportation of Finger Lakes wine.

The moderating influences of the lake allow cultivation of grapes like Blaufrankisch, Saperavi, most of the Bordeaux varieties, Chardonnay, Riesling and Rkatsiteli. The vineyards also include Pinot Noir that is approaching an ancient-vine status and those vines are recognized as the second oldest in the country. These contribute to a broad portfolio of wines that are uniformly well crafted and of exceptional quality.

Future plans at Dr. Frank involve continued innovation and improvements to customer experience. According to General Manager Meagan Frank, the “vision for the next 10 years is to continue to pioneer new grape varieties to the region, continue to innovate in the vineyard/cellar and to offer one of the most exceptional customer experiences in the Finger Lakes. We will continue to collaborate with local artists and infuse our company with staff from around the world to foster collaboration and diversity."

In the final analysis, Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery does not rely solely on its historic status as its source of relevance. It is, by any measure, both a world class producer and an American icon. If you were going to visit just one US winery, Dr. Konstantin Frank would be the one. After you pay them a visit, please let me know what you think.
